Calderón resumes the green agenda, now through business

The former president meets this Wednesday with businessmen in Mexico City to present his Sustainable Human Development Foundation

After a year after leaving the presidency of Mexico, Felipe Calderón returns to the country with an agenda that he promoted during his mandate: renewable energies and green businesses to which he gave incentives to invest during his administration.

This Wednesday, Calderón will present his Sustainable Human Development Foundation (FDHC) at the Industriales Club, in Mexico City.

“It is time to talk about profits, jobs and growth levels,” Calderón said last January 29, in an interview at the Harvard Kennedy School, where he participates in the Angelopolous program.

Only those who, in addition to being invited, make a donation of 5,000 pesos will be able to attend tonight's meeting, according to the Excelsior newspaper last January. CNNMéxico has not been able to independently confirm this information. A similar meeting with businessmen took place on January 28 in the municipality of San Pedro Garza García, in the industrial state of Nuevo León.

Staff from the former president's office told Reforma that Europe Cell Phone Number List the former president's Foundation "is financed through the services it provides and donations."

Green investment in your government
The environmental issue and the effects of climate change were central to the policies of the Calderón government, which included goals – achieved – in reforestation, incentives to ejidatarios for providing environmental services and the attraction of investment from companies to generate electricity from renewable energies. .

The goal of his government was that 25% of the electricity generated in the country would not be from fossil fuels, but from renewable sources - water, wind and sun -, which he exceeded with 26% two months before concluding his administration.

Calderón paved the way for “green investment” in Mexico with incentives that included tax deductions and permits to generate renewable energy at no cost, among others. The result was investments in the generation of electricity from renewable energy, mainly wind, which totaled 6 billion dollars from 2008 to 2012.

By February 2012, Mexico already had 204 plants in operation or under construction for the generation of electrical energy through renewable sources.

Oaxaca and Veracruz are the states with the highest number of wind and bioenergy projects, respectively, according to information from Proméxico.

In December 2010, and under the Calderón administration, Cancún hosted the 16th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP-16) in which agreements were reached that include the approval of the ' Green Fund', a program that commits developed countries to mobilize 100 billion dollars annually starting in 2020 to Reduce Emissions from Forest Deforestation (REDD+).

On the global agenda
In addition to his foundation, Calderón chairs the Global Commission on Economy and Climate, a project created by the governments of seven countries in 2013, which will give a report to the UN next September on the profits that green businesses can generate without affecting the environment. .

We are investigating and trying to demonstrate that it is possible and necessary to reduce climate change at the same time as increasing economic growth, job creation, and poverty reduction,” Calderón said at Harvard.
